Instagram engagement rate calculator

Turn your likes and comments into an average engagement rate per post, using follower count as the denominator. Enter one post or a sample of posts; no Instagram account connection is needed.

Enter your post totals

Use whole numbers without commas or abbreviations. This calculation counts likes and comments only; saves and shares are excluded.

Use the same follower-count snapshot for the selected posts.

Enter 1 for a single post, or the number in your sample.

Add the likes across those posts. Enter 0 if there are none.

Add the comments across the same posts. Enter 0 if there are none.

No Instagram login required. The calculation runs in your browser. Changing an input clears the previous result.

The formula this calculator uses

Average engagement rate per post = (total likes + total comments) ÷ number of posts ÷ follower count × 100.

For example, 450 likes and 50 comments across five posts, with 2,000 followers, gives 5.00%. With one post, the formula is simply (likes + comments) ÷ followers × 100.

This follows the likes-and-comments, follower-based method described by Socialinsider. It is one measurement method, not a universal Instagram score. Saves, shares, reach and views are excluded.

Choose a consistent sample

  • Add likes and comments from the same selected posts, then enter that post count. Enter totals, not averages.
  • Use one follower-count snapshot for the sample. If followers changed substantially while those posts were published, this is an estimate using the count you enter.
  • Compare similar formats and time windows. Give each post a similar amount of time to collect interactions, and keep paid and organic samples separate.
  • Include posts with zero interactions. Leaving them out changes the average.

Why another tool may show a different rate

Followers represent audience size. Reach describes unique accounts exposed to content, while exposure counts can include repeat viewing. Dividing by those different quantities produces different results. Some tools also include saves or shares in the interaction total.

For example, Buffer documents exposure-based engagement calculations, including pooled calculations in some summaries. Compare a rate only with another rate that uses the same interactions, denominator and sample method.

What the result can and cannot tell you

The result is not the percentage of your followers who engaged. Interactions may come from nonfollowers, and one person can take multiple actions. A result above 100% is therefore possible; it is not automatically an error.

There is no universal good or bad threshold built into this tool. A rate cannot verify follower authenticity, predict sales or prove why performance changed. Use consistent samples to examine changes alongside the actual responses your content receives.
